Uncomfortable, annoying, and embarrassing, constipation is a problem that we all face from time to time, but for some it can even be exceedingly painful or threatening. While pharmaceutical laxatives can help to some extent, frequent use of laxatives poses a serious risk, which is why natural alternatives are so popular. Figs, also known as anjeer, are extremely popular as a constipation cure, but do they really help provide relief?
Figs For Constipation

Constipation, in addition to infrequent bowel movements can also cause hard and bulky stools that are difficult to pass, which can prove painful. Constipation can result from factors such as a low-fiber diet, a lack of exercise, dehydration, certain medications, and stress. Increasing fiber intake is one of the most effective ways to relieve constipation and lower the risk of hemorrhoids, which is why figs are so highly recommended – they are extremely rich in fiber.

Fibers are of two kinds –soluble and insoluble, both of which have different effects on your bowels. Dried figs are loaded with fiber, as a single dried fig contains 0.8 grams of total fiber. So if you have four dried figs a day, it’ll be more than enough to make your bowel movements regular.
Soluble fiber binds with fatty acid, forming a gel and hastens the passage of stools. Insoluble fiber forms a bulky stool that moves more quickly through the gastrointestinal tract. Soluble fiber also helps you when you are trying to lose weight, as it is digested slowly, making you feel full for longer. Insoluble fiber helps prevent constipation because the bulky, soft stool it forms passes more easily through the intestines.
Fiber in Fresh Figs

A large, fresh fig contains 1.9 grams of total fiber; a small one has 1.2 grams of total fiber, so, regardless of their size, a handful of fresh figs or just two, can relieve your constipation troubles. What’s more is that you can add them to your salads, or have them as a dessert after lunch, or even eat them with other fruits to get your daily fiber intake requirement. The daily fiber intake goal for women is around 25 gm and for men, it is about 38 gm.

If you don’t normally eat figs, don’t binge eat them, as they can cause frequent bowel movements. Instead, gradually increase your fiber intake over a few weeks. Adding other fruits, vegetables and whole grains to your diet can also help you meet your daily fiber requirement. In addition to increasing fiber intake with foods like figs, it would also be a good idea to increase your levels of physical activity and also revisit your pooping posture!
